Comments:

1961-65 Wake Forest College, BA, history (Lil would not have been impressed by my efforts as a history major.) Lettered in varsity tennis and was a professional folksinger. 1968 graduated from WFU law school. I actually studied a lot in law school. 1969-74 active duty in Army, including being an MP company commander and lawyer in the 82nd Airborne Div. No, I didn't enjoy parachuting. My first of three marriages commenced in 1975. (Some of my unkind friends call me "Short-term Memory.") Alex was born while I was a professor at UNCC. PhD in criminology at Florida St. 1981. I did a lot of very interesting research and writing for publication on a wide variety of criminal justice subjects. Staying in Army Reserve as a lawyer was a very good decision. My teaching of Criminal Justice at the univ. level ended in 2004. Am retired in Columbia, SC. Am enjoying regular golf (really, really ugly swing), duplicate bridge, some music, and writing. I have established a nonprofit on heart and brain health, Heart and Brain Info Teams (HABIT), which I hope will eventually help a lot of people. I developed a supplements and exercise program in 1982 which has, I and some doctors strongly believe has helped me to avoid effects of extremely bad heart and brain disease risk factors. This is a very difficult project. Maybe partly because Mother was a Democrat, I have been an avid Democrat all of my life and have enjoyed some working in campaigns. After Mother died in 1989, I greatly enjoyed visiting Lil and talking with her about lots of interesting things, on which we nearly always agreed. I have completed a CD of my whistling of tunes I have composed to my guitar accompaniment. Send me an email (memoryhabit@outlook.com) with you mailing address, and I will send you a CD.

School Story:

While I think we were fortunate to have the good teachers we had, I'll mention one whose teaching has helped me significantly over my later life: Miss Flora Steele. Following up on good teachers on grammar, writing, etc. in earlier grades, she did a wonderful job of teaching writing and appreciation of literature. Though she also taught French very well, I, in retrospect, wish I could have studied Spanish. Grammar and writing skills and information I got from these teachers, especially Miss Steele, allowed me, through good writing, to succeed enough in my work career.
